Composer-pianist Krystal J. F. Grant’s career has broadened from giving lecture-recitals in elementary schools of her hometown, Birmingham, Alabama to presenting multimedia installations in New York City.
She has performed at experimental venues in Brooklyn and participated in arts festivals in Connecticut, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Ohio. Besides college classrooms, she has taught in after-school programs, a homeless shelter, and a senior center. She majored in piano performance and Spanish at Vanderbilt University, where she developed her passion for the rhythmic arrays of Cuban music and the motivic moderation of Shostakovich. With her Ph.D. in composition from Stony Brook University, she served as an assistant professor of composition and theory in Lancaster, Pennsylvania for five years. She currently lives in Richmond, Virginia, where she teaches and shares diverse music to reckon with society’s brokenness alongside artists and audiences.
