The Last Tycoon is an indie rock and roll band centered around Atlanta-based songwriter John Gladwin.
The band began as a solo writing experiment for Gladwin when he was living in Stockholm, Sweden. He started writing songs that were evocative of American landscapes and demanded more instrumentation than just an acoustic guitar. In 2015 after moving to Georgia, Gladwin recorded the EP Death By Dixie with producer and Southern artist Jim White. The record evoked the Deep South of the new Millennium with songs and sonic landscapes that blended the personal and political. Gladwin’s lyrics and writing garnered acclaim. The Bluegrass Situation said, “The through-thread that Gladwin weaves into Death by Dixie is the New South versus the Old … the good, the bad, and the sometimes ugly truths that lurk both on and under the surface of the region and its history.” Extensive touring followed the record’s release and new songs were born on the road. In 2017 Gladwin again teamed up with Jim White to record The Last Tycoon’s full-length debut album. The new album will be released in 2018.
