Bo Rocha (real name Kate Sproule) is an English singer/songwriter and producer known for creating beautifully intense and melancholy pop music that combines the atmospheric aspects of the decadent trip-hop sound and the burgeoning elements of alternative R&B.
Hailing from London, U.K., the young singer/songwriter first became involved with music at the age of four, learning how to sing and play the piano with both classical and jazz training. Alongside this, she was raised on a diet of alternative, generation-defining acts such as Radiohead, the Smashing Pumpkins, and David Bowie. Her tastes and inspirations expanded further when she briefly moved to Berlin in her teens and began to listen to hip-hop artists such as Lil Wayne and Nas.
She didn’t begin writing songs properly until her University days, by which point she had abandoned the rigid rules of the classical world and embraced a more impulsive and unlimited creative way of songwriting.
Over the course of her studies, she became involved with a number of projects, eventually joining the London-based electronica dream folk group Mt. Wolf. Sproule was featured on a number of recordings, and was commended for her performance on their 2013 EP, Hypolight. She had a brief yet cathartic tenure with the group, ultimately deciding that she needed to explore her creativity on more independent terms. After parting ways with the band, the young talent eventually resurfaced with her own cuts; Bo Rocha was born and she debuted her first track, "Tangerine Flake," on SoundCloud in early 2015. The track received widespread acclaim and was praised for its crystalline production, Sproule’s vocal talents, and her ability to transcend a number of electronically tinged genres in a unique manner.
Sproule spent the rest of 2015 completing a number of tracks and released her first EP, Even Green, in November of that year. Just like "Tangerine Flake," the EP received further praise for its grand lyrical imagery and lush production. Bo Rocha went on to perform a number of shows in late 2015 and early 2016 to promote the EP, and got to work on writing her debut full-length in 2016. ~ Rob Wacey, Rovi
