Tsu Shi Ma Mi Re, often styled TsuShiMaMiRe, is a punk-inspired indie rock band from Chiba, Japan. A play on the word "mamire" (approximately, "smeared"), the name combined parts of the original members' names: Yayoi Tsushima (bass), Mari Kono (vocals/guitar), and Mizue Masuda (drums).
The women began playing together in college and made their first homemade recordings in the early 2000s. They performed at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas in 2004, and their official debut, Pregnant Fantasy, arrived via Benten Tokyo in the summer of that year. Establishing an American fan base early on, the band would return to the U.S. regularly to tour. Benten Toyko released their follow-up album, No-Miso Shortcake, in 2007. With TsuShiMaMiRe and Rock and Beer appeared a year later, and Ah Umi Da followed in 2009. They continued a pattern of annual releases after partnering with Good Charamel Records, which released 2010's Sex on the Beach, 2011's Giving More Blood, and 2012's Shocking. Space Shower Music took over in 2013 with an eponymous album, and Tsu Shi Ma Mi Re's first compilation, Mamire, was released in 2014. The following year brought their ninth studio LP, Almost Human. After over 17 years with the trio, Masuda gave notice in January 2017 that she was moving on to pursue other projects. She played a farewell show with the band in Chiba that February. ~ Marcy Donelson, Rovi
