In 2012 I started the first version of my band “William Soovik Grand Finale”. At that time the group consisted of 8 people and we played some weird kind of free-jazz and marching band hybrid-music. This constellation existed for a couple of years but other bands started to crave more of my attention and my bandleader-ambitions where put on hold.
After a period of heavy gig-drought, jazz-anxiety and restlessness, over the summer and fall of 2017, it was time to do something of my own again. Something simple, fun and not so fragile. Something rustic with good friends. All of these things resulted in the debut album Rustik Musik. We spent most of 2019 in a cellar in Gothenburg; being the house-band at a small venue and rehearsing new material. We recorded our second album in February 2020.
I kind of think that the music sounds like if Led Zeppelin started a band together with The Bad Plus, Nirvana and Frank Zappa that exclusively wrote theme songs for Japanese manga series or commercial jingles for german hardware-stores. It’s easy to imagine, right?
