Born in Peterborough, Caplen grew up between London and Canterbury before spending a spell in Portland after earning a scholarship to study cello in the US in his late teens. It was here he first met Macklemore, whom he would go onto to both tour and write music with, first collaborating on ‘Mirade’, from Macklemore’s Gemini LP, in 2017.
From his early beginnings as a classically trained musician, Caplen’s style has been influenced by the artists he’s cherished over the years. In 2016, he covered “Blinded By The Lights” by The Streets, as an ode to the impact Mike Skinner’s music had on him. Eminem opened him up to US hip-hop in his teens. And when it comes to singing and lyricism, he cites everyone from Bill Withers to John Legend.
His debut single proper, ‘Flat Champagne’, was released in summer 2017 and featured BBC Sound Poll winner, Ray BLK. His follow up single, ‘Trouble’, ft. Ms Banks was released in June 2018, furthering Caplen’s reputation as one of the UK’s brightest new talents.
