Malton, Ontario, 1985. For the last five years John Sliz Sr. had surrendered the basement of his house on Victory Crescent to his drum playing son and his musician friends.
It was a hangout for a lot of noisy bands, including, `Marathon’ with Tim Cooper on guitar, John Sliz Jr. on drums and a revolving door of singers and bass players, much like Deep Purple in the early years. Brian Payne jammed with John and even Marathon a few times, but nothing became of it. Well, nothing happened until all three reunited in Durham Region in 2020 to jam in John’s garage. No longer a basement band, they have been promoted to a garage band and now go by the name, `Marathon 85’, to represent the year that they all met.
Marathon 85 is (in alphabetical order):
Tim Cooper: guitars
Brian Payne: vocals and bass
John Sliz: drums, piano, keyboards and backing vocals
