Growing up in North-East England, Kiran Hungin’s childhood wasn’t the most typical for the location at the time.
Born to an Indian father and English mother, it was usual to experience a mixed bag of sounds and tastes at home. It’s not surprising, then, that the music of Kiran’s project Seaker also paints a multi-layered picture.
Records and music were part of the daily fabric, as Kiran’s father is an avid collector and listener. “Part of the reason I grew up in the house I did, was that my dad wanted a large gap between us and any neighbours, so he could play music as loud as he wanted without getting complaints. His way of relaxing after work would be to put an album on super loud and then sit in front of the speakers and fall asleep, so there was always music playing and most of my memories are tied up in songs."
Kiran’s sound has moved from a folky start to a more ethereal and layered place, enveloped in atmospheric vocals and emotion somewhere between a sense of loss and one of hope.
“I try to make music that is epic and delicate at the same time. I love those spine-tingly moments when there’s an emotional twist in a song or a tiny whispered vocal moves into a huge layered block of sound. I think for a while I associated art with sadness and only took something seriously in an artistic sense if it was melancholic. That shows still in how I write, though I also feel very full of hope and wonder, so it’s not all doom and gloom.”
