James was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson’s at the age of just 42 and Piano Hands is a response to the increasing difficulties he experiences managing his condition. He uses the piano as therapy, to prolong the function in his hands. Together they’ve written and arranged music to play as a piano duo, so they can control how many notes James has to play with his left hand and Juliette is able to step in and cover James when his Parkinson’s intervenes. James has noticed an additional benefit: his symptoms are less debilitating while he is playing. Wondering whether the focus required to play was responsible, he took a course in Mindfulness and found it helped to manage the pain he lives with. His responses have resulted in funding from Parkinson’s UK for a new trial into Mindfulness and Parkinson’s.
