Rudi Arapahoe is an English composer. His compositions, which have been described as "melancholic worlds of dream and hallucination," are notable for their minimal settings of classical chamber instrumentation alongside technology; in inventive, slow moving, spacious arrangements.
Conceptually the works are influenced by his formal education in Psychology and centre on themes of identity.
Double Bind (2013) explored the different selves we use to inhabit our various faces and incarnations. The critically acclaimed EP was inspired by the writings of Gregory Bateson (Double Bind) and Ronald David Laing (The Divided Self). In 2015 Rudi took this exploration further by creating a computer program in the SuperCollider programming language called False Self. False Self is an algorithmic musician designed to compose and play alongside his true self. False Self can learn, hear and respond to improvisation and existing musical score. Rudi's first set of collaborations with False Self were published in 2016.
In February 2018 Rudi released a series of five compositions called A False Memory of a Sports Party. The series was inspired by Elizabeth Loftus's pioneering work into false memories; and continues the development of the False Self algorithm and the resulting musical language.
