Jafala (Jay Cook) is a musician from Vermont USA, who has been releasing world and electronic influenced pieces since the summer of 2019. His tunes reflect his studies with, and listening to, various teachers and performers over the years: grooves and percussion from world musician/composer Steve Leicach, vocal improvisation and creation from Bobby McFerrin, performance and improvisation from cellist David Darling, layering of texture and lyric writing from Fela Kuti (inventor of Afrobeat), hypnotic multi-part guitar work, mbira and vocals from Thomas Mapfumo (Zimbabwean musician), and the electronics and vocals of Sylvan Esso. As a lifelong activist, reader and environmentalist, Jafala infuses lyrics that bring awareness to the social issues we encounter around the globe. For example, his first release was reviewed by Soundfly.com as "an island-tinged song with a strong groove... 'Befriend Your Brother' promotes a positive message about connecting with our homeless cohabitants where we live." Jafala's artistic intention is to tell a story through his music, one that moves his audience towards a spiritual journey with interesting and danceable groooves, socially conscious lyrics, “vocalizations”, “invented language”, world instruments and soulful sound design.
