Tesia Mallory (vocals and piano) and Matt Shetler (vocals and guitar) were introduced by mutual friend Justin Smith in 2014 to play music together.
From the very first meeting it was obvious that Mallory and Shetler’s voices were extremely complementary to each other. The three musicians, along with an expanded six-piece line-up of friends and past bandmates, released two EPs under the band name Good Luck Year in 2015. As Good Luck Year wound down and the members departed the group, Mallory and Shetler decided to refocus their efforts on what was the obvious strength of their collaboration - their harmonies, straightforward songwriting, a more focused and intimate instrumentation and arrangement, and their dual vocal performance. The duo began writing, recording and performing as The Nautical Theme in May of 2017. Somewhat out of necessity they approached their live performance much different than previous acts they had been involved with had done. While the members of The Nautical Theme have great reverence for the venues they had played at previously in and around Dayton, OH, and for the bands that they had shared those stages with, Mallory and Shetler knew that those spaces and bills wouldn’t serve their performance as well. They struck out regionally, seeking out listening rooms that highlighted the personal nature of their music and its ability to connect in meaningful ways to their audience.
