Since hitting the local open mic scene in late 2018 it’s been the rise and rise of Rolling Thunder.
The energetic 5 piece have swept across the Northamptonshire area entertaining at numerous venues across their home county, supporting the likes of The Keepers, Serotones & Damn Teeth.
Singer Charlie Smith & songwriter Ryan Kelly formed the group at school whilst studying the Vietnam War, hence the name. It wasn’t long before Harry Clayton was drafted in; not just to play, but first learn the guitar. Joel Sweet followed, also learning the bass from scratch. Harry’s cousin Josh Green completed the outfit, coming in to play the drums.
The guitar driven band combine a mixture of indie 80’s guitar, 90’s rock ‘n’ roll guitar & modern indie guitar with Ryan drawing inspiration from the likes of Oasis, The Strokes & Kings of Leon when writing. With similar influences Harry’s style has been forged by an early Arctic Monkeys vibe & a later obsession with Interpol. Bass heroes Peter Hook (Joy Division/New Order) & Bruce Foxton (The Jam) provide inspiration on Joel’s bass lines giving tracks new-wave undertones. From a vocal perspective Charlie draws inspiration from the likes of Bernard Sumner (New Order) & David Gedge (Wedding Present) with their nervous yet atmospheric energy.
Debut single Break in at the Nachtwinkel received a great reception, and the future has plenty in store, with a back catalogue of great tunes yet to be released, to hear them catch Rolling Thunder live!
