Guillaume de Machaut
A French composer and important figure in the French Ars Nova whose works include sacred and secular vocal music, notably Messe de Notre Dame.
As the great synthesizer and inventor of contrapuntal techniques in the 1300s, Machaut composed works that are wonders of technique and lyricism. Especially notable: the lovely isorhythmic motets (De bon espoir, Puis que la douce, Speravi), where all three texts are sung at the same time; the glorious rhythmic inventions of the Messe de Notre Dame; and the rondeau Ma fin est mon commencement ("My end is my beginning"). ~ Blue Gene Tyranny, Rovi
