Final Pilots is a solo project by Gavin Wray. Blending guitars, loops, synthesisers, found sounds and beats to craft sonic stories set in a world of pastoral havens, dystopian metropolises and pan-continental guardian biker gangs, the first album Brinkmann Flag was released in 2017.
It features ten instrumental tracks narrating the adventures of a space- and time-jumping reluctant superhero with fantastic hair, fashion sense and a two-wheeled petrol monster, who protects a confused and dysfunctional Earth population from fracking itself to smithereens.
The songs draw on psych and contemporary rock, Mancuniana, big beat, electronica, martial arts movies, sci-fi, J. G. Ballard, and the cities and landscapes of northern England. Musical influences include God Is An Astronaut, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Aloft, Death In Vegas, Minor Victories, and Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation.
Gavin’s lifelong obsession with music began as a teenager in Stockport. Following a two-year stint as guitarist for indie band Slaphappy, he moved to Hull in 1996. There he joined indie pop band The Emus and was a resident DJ at the University’s alternative/indie nights.
In 1998, he co-founded Satisfaction – a soul, funk and retro pop night – a legacy which continued in Hull until 2012, after Gavin moved to Birmingham in 2001. In 2004, he performed with Frank Sidebottom (the late Chris Sievey) at Variety is Back! and played guitar for roots/rockabilly band Rhino and the Ranters from 2013 to 2015.
