James Gaffigan is an American conductor, at home in both the symphonic and operatic worlds. From 2003 to 2006, he served as the assistant conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra, working with Franz Welser-­Möst.
Gaffigan was the first-prize winner at the 2004 Sir Georg Solti International Conducting Competition, and he has participated in the Aspen Music Festival and the Tanglewood Music Festival. He was also an associate conductor of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, chosen for the position by Michael Tilson Thomas. Gaffigan is the chief conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, with a contract that runs to 2022. He is also the principal guest conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic and the Gürzenich Orchestra of Cologne. He has also appeared as a guest conductor with the New York Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris, the Orchestre National de France, the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and many other orchestras around the world. He has recorded for Attacca, Myrios Classics, Challenge Classics, and Harmonia Mundi.
