Kai Straw was born and raised in a suburb of the San Francisco, Bay Area; Fairfield, CA. At thirteen years old, with an old boom mic from his dad's closet, he wrote and recorded songs with his acoustic guitar in his parents' garage; inspired by Dashboard Confessional, The Early November and Blink-182.
In high school, he was given a copy of the the beat-making program, Fruity Loops, and made hip-hop beats - eventually producing within Fairfield's hip-hop scene, ultimately forming a creative partnership with local legend, Taj-He-Spitz. After Taj-He-Spitz was arrested, however, Kai decided to record his own vocals. At first, being most familiar with hip-hop, he tried his hand at rapping, accumulating in the project - 'The Tragedian's Decoupage' - an exploration of the unsettled human spirit. Shortly after, and two tapes later, he moved to San Francisco proper, and began working for the hip-hop nightclub, City Nights. The owner, Ray, recognizing Kai's talent, talked to him about artists who sequester their abilities to the realm of the experimental, preventing the world from being affected by their work. This inspired Kai to dive into a new project entitled 'Toothpick' with producer James The Bear, influenced by James Brown, Elvis Presley and Otis Redding. The album gave him his first taste of national success, placing him on Spotify's Fresh Finds, climbing Spotify's charts, and positioning him to claim the attention of the world at large.
