The charismatic trio ‘Whales & This Lake’ are Hans Olav Settem, Max Peder Brekke and Anders Søvik Hjelden.
All hailing from small towns on the Norwegian west coast, they grew up in different solitaire yet scenic environments. As a reaction they all started making music, varying from indie rock to jazz and electronic. When they later met in the urban headquarter of Norway, Oslo, their different personalities and musical backgrounds urged them into making their very own blend of electronic pop music. On the surface, pleasing to the ear with a nice blend of clashing instrumental sounds and urgent electronic textures. Yet on a lyrical and melodic level, there is a confusing sense of sadness and frustration. Whales pushes the melancholic envelope with a compelling feel of muddled clarity. Through an expert mix of electronic vibes and rock sensibilities, the band crafts one earworm melody after another with splashes of campy vocals, jittery beats and pulsating basslines.
