Makeunder is the moniker of songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Hamilton Ulmer, based out of Oakland, California.
Embracing a dizzying array musical styles - from R&B to Renaissance motet to art rock to modern orchestral music - Makeunder crafts songs about Ulmer's larger-than-life family of misfit artists, and their struggles and triumphs in carving out a place in a world not made for them. The thread that ties together the entire affair is Ulmer's brash vocal energy and soulful melismatic turns.
Described by NPR Music's Bob Boilen as "one of the most outstanding and challenging new bits of music I've heard this year", Makeunder's latest EP, "Great Headless Blank," recounts the wake of tragedy, confusion, and financial and emotional instability following the death in 2011 of Ulmer's father. The songs depict fading memories with relentlessly grandiose brush strokes - the sadness of a run-down childhood home as a frozen cavern of memory, the busy horror of holding an estate sale of a family's possessions imagined as a factory assembly line, the driving of an ailing father across the desert so he may die in his own bed as an epic yet nihilistic American road trip adventure, a parodoxically ebullient & desperate lamentation.
It is an album that demands to be listened to intently, and multiple times. But despite all its diverting enormity, each listen of "Great Headless Blank" only stands to accentuate the portrayal of a family suffocated by its own grief.
