ESK-ESQUE plays raw gravelly blues / roots noir like they came running straight from the cotton fields. With winding voice, authentic guitar playing, vile foot stomping and erratic grooving baritone sax the tarnished stories come to life. The bandmembers are founding-member William van Giessen (vocals, guitar, drums) and Menno Romers (baritone saxophone). William started Esk-Esque as a solo singer-songwriter project after continously playing in bands ranging from all different kinds of musical genres. After a while he got back to playing the blues. That's what's inside of him, and that's what got him started grabbing up the guitar in his youth. While performing as a support-act for legendary powerpop band The Posies he tried some new blues songs in the tradition of Robert Johnson, The Black Keys, Daniel Norgren, Jack White, Muddy Waters, Son House, Howlin' Wolf, Jim White, Scott Morgan, Tom Waits, Judge Bone, Hound Dog Taylor, Lonesome Shack and Morphine. The crowd turned their heads and the decision was made. No more solo singer-songwriter songs... back to the roots. After a while Menno joined the band. He has a life long experience in critically acclaimed bands (such as The Watchman), musical ensembles and touring the world as a musician and theatre-maker. At a certain time he gave up on music for some years. But after hearing the songs of Esk-Esque he was intrigued and asked if he could jam along. A great and unique combo was born.
