With My Eyes Wide Open, the forerunning single from Brother Brother’s upcoming sophomore release hails a new and darker mood for the upcoming duo: one that finds them disinterested in expectations and subtlety, instead throwing themselves head first into the undefined territory between genres as they fearlessly pursue the possibilities of their music both lyrically and sonically.
Playfully coined “indie hip hop with a banjo,” With My Eyes Wide Open and the band a whole both reflect these sentiments. It lends itself to the idea of candid expression and relatable identity, ultimately revealing the nature of this new sibling group: nonconformist in arrangement and revealingly honest in content.

Brother Brother doesn’t come quietly with its synth-laden, electric banjo wielding instrumentation and rap-influenced rhythmic elements. Instead of feeling like a frankenstein of genres, the group rather seems to underline the fact that folk, rap, indie rock, and perhaps modern music in general seem to bow to poignancy and passion before they do the lines of any particular classification. The content is simultaneously a cry for help and a solution to its own demons, both dark and hopeful: at once a folk act in the family of artists like The Lumineers with statements to be made alongside that of Twenty-One Pilots.
