The vulnerability found in the music of Breeda Murphy traces back to the ballads she grew up listening to in rural West Cork, Ireland.
Steeped in the tradition of songs and singers, where stories are told and the voice is centre stage. The title of her album You Keep a Weather Eye reflects an artist who has the uncanny ability to help us discover what is real about ourselves. Her songs, sometimes raw, sometimes allusive, always exquisitely sung, invite us to try to understand the essence of our own nature.
Recorded in Ireland, Dubai, and Chicago, You Keep a Weather Eye features an intriguing international cast of musicians including Kenny Dread, Nick Macri, Isaac Tabor, Lea Miklódy, and Tim Daisy, creating a sound that touches on folk, blues and jazz without being purely any particular genre. The album as a whole is a meditation on loss, aging and finding second chances, along with a perspective on the luminary figure of controversial Irish rebel Sir Rodger Casement ("Life Of A Dreamer"), and a subtle interpretation of the traditional emigration lament "A Stór Mo Chroí".
Sometimes a song can help us through difficult times: Breeda's song "A Place in You", just released as a single, has that grace. It invites you to look within to find your place of real stillness and wisdom.
