Maija Kaunismaa (1974) is a Finnish composer, singer, musician, performer and vocal coach. Kaunismaa’s wide musical influences range from Carole King to Annie Lennox, from Kraftwerk to Bruce Springsteen, and from Hollywood Film Scores to Finnish Folk Music.
Her second solo album titled The Pine House Songs was released in June 8. 2020. Kaunismaa is well known of her strong and personal singing voice and of her catchy tunes. The songs on this new pop-album deal with lost happiness, unique quality of life, burdens passed on through generations, loneliness, and the comforting aspect of singing. Although the album was finished just before the coronavirus pandemic, it still feels like it was a soundtrack deliberately composed for this particular moment. The melancholic melodies are paced with strong and pulsing rhythms emphasizing the powerful poetic lyrics describing the impermanence of our existence.
Maija is a traveller between the worlds - rooted in Finnish folk tradition yet well-versed in contemporary musical styles, and this is evident in her folk-like vocal melodies and the eclectic influences in her instrumental writing. Maija's pure voice is as much at home in quiet, reflective songs as in joyous calls for compassion and action. The lyrics she writes, audible thanks to her clear diction, comfort and console, and open up the world outside our four walls and beyond the limitation of our sight, thereby inviting us to travel The Road Not Taken.
