Born and raised in Wellington, Daniel McClelland spent his 20s as a software tester by day, and a musician by night.
He and his diplomat wife moved abroad to New York, where they lived for 3 years. While there, he continued the juggling act; testing software for one of the US’ biggest mobile apps, and beginning work on his album Anxious Heart. As the record rapidly grew in complexity, he quit his job and took a month to self-record and perform its hundreds of layers of instruments and harmonies. He and his wife moved back home to Wellington, where post-production began in earnest. A year later, the record was released in August, 2017, just in time before the birth of McClelland’s first child.
Anxious Heart was received well in its first weeks: it charted at #2 on the NZ Heatseeker Album charts. The record featured on Radio NZ’s The Sampler, where Nick Bollinger said it was “an album that aims to rehabilitate the genre of classic pop-rock - no small goal - and in its best moments comes close to achieving it.” said 'Anxious Heart' is "a delightful reminder of how music should be made."
Daniel was one of five Auckland Live Best Independent Debut 2018 Finalists, along with L.A.B., The Miltones, Kendall Elise, and Strangely Arousing. In 2016, his work was featured in 31 Days In Wellington, a compilation of Wellington’s best artists, made for charity Kaibosh. In 2010, he opened for Flight of the Conchords, and in 2009 he performed in Wellington’s Fringe Festival.
