Caught up in the haze of mind-numbing 9-5s, gluttonous weekend binges, and a revolving door of failed relationships in Toronto's west end, KNIFEY was formed by like-minded friends Phil Linton and Max Trinz.
The two guitarists were soon joined by pals Kyle Marcovecchio (bass) and Ammar Karam (drums), filling out the roster.
But, really, life isn't so bad, and KNIFEY, like so many of us, continually walks the razor's edge between the dispiriting estrangement of modern social and dating scenes, and the carefree inebriated bliss of mid-twenties inner city living. At times the rope is tugged further this way or that, but in the end the result is the same: a sonic reflection of what it means to be young and alive today in a city and region that is as much concrete as beach.
In a wash of reverb, the nostalgic longing for the ideal California lifestyle and the often dour reality of urban life are blended into a mélange of surf riff-driven chord progressions. In frustration, the band's music calls out for a more simple life free from the tedious complications of the modern world. In that sense, KNIFEY is, at its core, optimistic, and it is that optimism that is the real driving force behind the band's sound.
