Birch Riley originally formed as a four piece in 2000 with singer/guitarist Wes Hlebichuk, bassist Shawn Thompson, keyboardist Paul Carrico, and drummer Rick Sloot. They recorded and released their debut album, SCATTERED in 2001 . The band carried on in various forms until 2009, when Wes, Shawn, and Rick recorded the EP, 3, which was released in 2010. In 2011, local musician Phil Calvert joined the band on bass and Shawn moved into a multi-instrumental role, focusing primarily on guitar and violin. The band headed into the studio in April of 2012 to begin work on what would eventually become their second album. As time went on, the project kept expanding in scope and the band’s ultimate vision for the album turned from a collection of songs into a full-fledged concept album with a sci-fi theme. The band released a preview track from these sessions called IN DISGUISE in October 2017. In 2020, amidst a deadly global pandemic, Birch Riley was able to come together and put the last pieces of their long-awaited second album, FRAGMENTS OF SPACE-TIME into place. This interstellar concept album is the culmination of 8 years of hard work and determination, and represents an uncompromising musical vision of the band. It was released on November 11th, 2020.
