When Billy Bennett moved to Nashville in 2013, it was a time of big change - not only for Bennett, who was coming straight out of a 3-year substance-abuse rehabilitation process, but also for Nashville, which was beginning to see an explosion of growth and expansion.
Bennett quickly made inroads with the East Nashville music scene as a recording engineer, given his experience with bands like MGMT and The Whigs. Bennett's roommates, of the band Los Colognes, introduced him to Andrija Tokic at the Bomb Shelter where Bennett quickly became the house engineer and go-to guy for a long list of local acts (check out his engineering and mixing work on Los Colognes' album Dos.) But for all his engineering chops, many found Bennett's musical output to be his most interesting quirk, despite him being a record-setting kicker for the University of Georgia, an actor (We Are Marshall), and a professor at a local university.
You can catch Bennett with his Middle Tennessee Postmodern Experimental Pop Band (featuring members of Fly Golden Eagle, Majestico, and Promise Land Sound. Describing the music as "zaney ELO seen through the brush of MC Esher, fronted by the birth child of Brian Wilson and the Buddha" might be a stretch, but hitting a high bar is not a problem for Bennett (no field goal puns, please). Listen for yourself if he is a true Renaissance man or master of none...
