What began as the solo recording project of singer/songwriter Grace Rowland Park, the group formed in 2012 under the band name Grace Park and The Deer and released "An Argument for Observation." The songs have a dark, folky feel; eerily lilting melodies with unexpected subjects.
In 2013 they lost friend and member Stephanie Bledsoe and their second release, "On the Essence of the Indomitable Spirit" (2015) is dedicated to her memory.
Their 2016 album “Tempest and Rapture” marries their brand of moody Southern Gothic with symphonic psychedelia.
The Deer made Austin Music Awards’ Top 10 Best Performing Folk Bands for the past 3 years, and their cover art made Austin Music Industry Awards’ Top 5 Best Album Art twice. They've played festivals like Kerrville Folk, Old Settler’s, Utopiafest, WinterWonderGrass, Oregon Country Fair, SXSW, and co-billed with Elephant Revival, Big Thief, Wild Child.
