The music of Grotto straddles the complexity of Intelligent Dance Music (IDM), the structure and improvisation of jazz, and the soothing sounds of Eno’s ambient music. For the last few years, Dan has been working tirelessly on composing his first debut album, Spring Drips. Dan found his musical voice while crafting the album.
Composition of Spring Drips began in the summer of 2014 when Dan decided to bridge the gap between cold electronic sounds and human emotion. Over the course of his high school career, he spent each morning creating the foundation for the album on bus rides to school on his laptop. After recording original sounds, Dan dismantled each one, changed their textures, and reassembled them. He then created full harmonic arrangements around these structures with acoustic, software, and hardware instruments. Through experimentation, songs began to take shape around melodies, rhythms, or the timbres of different instruments.
Spring Drips is the culmination of hundreds of recordings of instruments, sounds processed with effects boxes, programs, and instruments that he made. The album was completed and released on December 16th, 2017.
