A cross between country pop and rock, Drive straddles genres. Nods go to Tim McGraw, Garth Brooks and Brad Paisley as well as current country stars like Blake Shelton and Keith Urban.
The record’s single, “Drivin’,” kicks off with a sweet hook and singalong chorus. "Pray for You" starts out a pretty acoustic tune then opens up like a flower in the summer sun, with simmering organ, gospel singing and sassy horns. “Wildest Dreams” is a tight rocker with a soaring melody and a great guitar solo. ”Backseat Love” is a sexy dose of nostalgia. Drive is immediate even as it reveals its layers with repeated listens.
The record co-stars the best musicians Schroder could get, including guitarist Duke Levine (Roseanne Cash, Mary Chapin Carpenter), keyboardist Jamie Edwards (Lori McKenna, Sara Bareilles), bassist Annie Hoffman and drummer Steve Chaggeris. Bob Ludwig, the Grammy-winning mastering pro (Beyonce, Beck and Carrie Underwood, etc.) put on the finishing touches.
"The reward has been in the journey," Schroder says, after a rebirth that elevated his songwriting and reignited his career. He hopes now his new stuff will get the attention many already feel it deserves. "If you don't have great songs," he says, "nothing else matters.”
