A child of Nigerian descent, her parents gifted her with the name “Michelle”, appeasing the biased palate of western culture.
“Lyric” was an identity developed in pursuit of poetry. The two names existed independently until she began recording music. She is now the singular “Lyric Michelle”.
Lyric Michelle is an evocative storyteller from Houston: music is her medium. In an industry oversaturated with boastful ignorance, she delivers truth, enlightenment, and multi-dimensional art.
Before music, she was writing poetry and short stories. Her parents favored professions in academia, so she began pursuing music, using money from open mics and cyphers to put herself through nursing school. In this hustle, she recognized music as her savior, saying, “[it] gave me voice and purpose”.
Her work is reminiscent of Lauryn Hill’s melodic neo soul and Tupac Shakur’s lyrical honesty. Though her influence is recognizable, her style is of her own.
Lyric is still exercising her narrative abilities. Her 2017 EP MissDirection earned her the #1 Houston Album Title from the Houston Chronicle and Lyricist of the Year. In addition, she’s performed in stadiums, opening for some of music’s finest. Beyond music, Lyric has explored other creative vocations by acting in independent films.
She is a tenacious lyricist, and a name to keep an eye on.
She is Lyric Michelle.
