Shad (Shadrach Kabango) is a Juno Award-winning rapper and songwriter born in Kenya and raised in London, Ontario.
His first album was released in 2005 and financed by winning the $17,500 Rhythm of the Future unsigned talent competition hosted by 91.5FM The Beat in Kitchener-Waterloo. Since then, Shad released 3 more albums, earning multiple Juno Award nominations - including a win for Best Rap Recording in 2011 - and a record-tying 3 short-list nominations for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize (2008, 2010, 2014). His peers in Canadian Hip Hop recently voted him the 2nd Greatest Rapper Ever in Canada in a poll produced by the CBC.
In addition to his career as a rapper, Shad has pursued a variety of interests both within and outside of music. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University (2005) and an M.A. from Simon Fraser University (2011). He participated in the CBC's Canada Reads debates in 2012, successfully defending Carmen Aguirre's memoir Something Fierce, and more recently, Shad hosted CBC's flagship arts and culture show q (2015-2016), and also hosted a 4-part Peabody award-winning and Emmy Award-nominated documentary on the history of hip hop for HBO Canada / Netflix entitled Hip Hop Evolution. Musically, Shad continues to create and explore new territory.
