Since their very first live shows in the spring of 1999, Pia Fraus have become Estonia's finest rock and/or pop ensemble.
In the early 2000s, as the initial line-up graduated from art school and Pia Fraus began to build a reputation at home, several labels overseas took an interest, specifically Clairecords in America. That publishing outlet, even now, declares itself a premium venue for "shoegaze, dream-pop, indie pop and everything in between!" A genial exclamation mark ends the list. Those same four terms also serve to frame the sound of Pia Fraus, whose trademark lyricism remains knee-deep in swathes of yearning reverb.
Western webzines began using adjectives such as "gorgeous" and "ethereal" on a regular basis, in order then to speak of "stunning harmonies" or an "unmistakable beauty." The same DIY romanticism colors the work of local label Seksound, with whom this guitar-wielding sextet have been closely associated for several years. As the band and its supportive publishers worked together during the 2000s in order to craft the shape of Baltic dream-pop, visiting ensembles would take note - and invite Pia Fraus on stage for support duties. These foreign votes of approval came from a wide range of styles: German electronica (Ulrich Schnauss), US/UK neo-psychedelia (Animal Collective, Fleckfumie), and the indie strains of Scandinavian pop (Frida Hyvönen, Suburban Kids with Biblical Names).
