Built on grassroot do it yourself ethics, WASI makes loud strides in their self-proclaimed genre, riot-pop. Comparable to the sounds of Pussy Riot meets MIA, they combine their influences of alternative hip hop, punk and top 40’s pop to create anthems that speak to your own tender time.
They have toured on festivals such as the Vans Warped Tour and PRIDE, shared the stage with artists such as The Mowgli’s, Shiny Toy Guns, The Naked and Famous and K. Flay. WASI has released three successful EPs and in Spring 2018 commenced on a US tour, supporting select dates with Caroline Rose. These fire-starters create music that is deeply personal yet danceable.
Founding members Salazar and Meehan's activism is a core essence of WASI's liberating energy. Salazar, co-founder of nationwide festival Women Fuck Shit Up Fest, and Meehan, who partnered with the ACLU in getting corporate conglomerate WALGREENS to pass a gender neutral restroom policy after a discrimination incident, question the status quo in their music and lifestyles.
“The group is well-equipped to be a part of the resistance, providing sounds and solace for young people coming into their own, just as music had helped them before.” - Billboard
