Before becoming a musician, and more specifically a trumpetist, it seems like The Bongo Hop aka Etienne Sevet has had several lives, which generally implied traveling, and somehow a sense of getting lost : as a journalist he directed documentaries ("La Voz" on salsa singer Hector Lavoe, and "Buscando a Abelardo" on Barranquilla's own tropical guitar maverick Abelardo Carbono), wrote pieces for french magazines (So Foot, World Sound), threw the Republica Calicuta concert series in Cali, released an Abelardo Carbono compilation (Vampisoul rec)...He also taught political science at the Javeriana University Cali and, upon his return to Europe, even earned a masters degree in Urbanism, then worked in Urban projects design, as well as initiated & participated in a number of grassroots urbanism and experimental architecture projects (Osthang projekt, with Berlin-based Raumlabor collective) ...
His insatiable apetite for discovery, sharing and creative processes brought him back to his first love, music. So, at age 34, he decided to learn the trumpet, and started composing soon after. His first album, Satingarona pt 1, embodies his transatlantic vision, that of a traveler and soundscapist, lost somewhere between the meandres of rios Satinga (Co) and Garonne (Fr), and tells a lot about his genre bending approach. Mixing sound textures, making space, the simplicity of composition to address directly the feet and hips, highly danceable rhythms, warm brass are his trademark.
