For more than a few years now, singer-songwriter Melaena Cadiz has been making a beautiful, dreamy brand of down-home folk. The daughter of a Filipino architect and Michigan-born artist, she spent her childhood between Kalamazoo, MI and Singapore. She started playing guitar and writing songs in high school, influenced by her mother’s collection of folk records. After leaving home she lived in Seattle, Paris and NYC for a number of years where she worked as a waitress, shop girl, and actress, among other odd jobs before rediscovering her love of song-writing when she became involved with the close-knit Northeast folk scene.
Her first EP, “Rattle The Windows,” was tracked little by little over the course of a year with Grammy award-winning sound engineer Tom Camuso (Steve Earle).
Her sophomore effort, “Deep Below Heaven” recorded mostly live, was produced by Alexander Foote and included appearances by James Felice (The Felice Brothers), Matt Bauer, dana falconberry, David Mansfield (Bob Dylan, Nanci Griffith).
In 2015, signed to MISRA Records (whose landmark releases include Phosphorescent, Destroyer and Great Lake Swimmers) she spent a winter writing in Joshua Tree. She enlisted producer Joe Rogers (The Shivers, Moby) to record her second LP. Her band mates Scott Colberg, David Turbeville and Arthur Vint sat in. The result is a sparse and airy soundscape that Stereogum called “the perfect soundtrack for wanderlusting.”
