The Birdhorse is the pseudonym of North Carolina-based singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer, Toni Hartley.
Hartley cut her teeth singing back-up for tUnE-yArDs, both on Nikki Nack and on the Red Hot Fela track, “Lady.” In 2015, friend, producer, and engineer Bobby Funk helped bring to life The Birdhorse’s debut album, Treasure. In 2018, The Birdhorse released a decidedly assured sophomore effort with Fool’s Adventure - nine tracks written, produced, and recorded by Hartley and traversing themes of bisexual identity, love, environmentalism and loss. The album was hailed by Durham Beat as a "profound, indie-folk tour de force.”
“Let Go” is the first single from The Birdhorse’s third effort coming in 2020. The Southern Sounding says the track serves up "a ramble of folk intimacy mixed with circuital experiments which clings to your bones and organs." Written, produced, performed and recorded entirely by Hartley, the new track explodes with serious musical maturation. A breathless whisper delivers full-throated and unrestricted. “Let Go” was written on a solo trip in the fire of Big Bend National Park on the heels of learning that her longtime partner was pregnant — “a path you have to take.” Elegantly mixed by Ari Picker from the orchestral folk-pop band Lost in the Trees, “Let Go” is a plea, a spell, an order, a hope, a path forward.
