Ian Chen is a Taiwanese-Canadian composer, orchestrator, and experimental multi-instrumentalist based in Los Angeles.
He often works in collaboration with prominent young filmmakers on projects that prosper in the indie film circles. In 2018, his score for American feature documentary THIS LAND won him nominations at several festivals across the globe including Fimucité in Spain, and was in competition for the Crystal Pine Award at the ISFMF alongside strong contenders such as Oscar-winning film ICARUS. Earlier the same year he worked with Australian director Amy Wang on her narrative short UNNATURAL, which won her Gold in the Young Director Award at Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. In 2019, he collaborated with Taiwanese horror director Lingo Hsieh on new Taiwanese TV series GREEN DOOR, which features legendary singer Jam Hsiao in the leading role, and premieres on PTS in Taiwan and NETFLIX globally.
Ian studied classical and modern orchestral composition at Cornell University, and furthered his education at NYU Steinhardt’s film music graduate program. His music is a unique blend of electronics, classical orchestration, and contemporary sampling techniques. He is proficient in a multitude of musical instruments across different musical families and cultural backgrounds, and his focus on texture and colour allows him to create soundscapes that are unique to each project, whether it be his solo works or on the big screen.
