Godlike Bear is the alias of multi-instrumentalist/songwriter Esbjörn Lilja. He started in his new home town of Dalarna, Sweden in 2017, with a dedicated DIY approach to writing, producing and recording sparser and more string oriented folk pop material, rather than to be stuck writing for bands who weren't dedicated enough or simply couldn’t pull it off.
The influences on the 2018 debut album Rites Of Passage goes from Nick Drake, John Martyn and Paul Simon all the way to Jim James and Bon Iver. Maybe the music is best described as a blend between South American, British and Scandinavian folk music, sometimes accompanied by lo-fi electronica beats and synths.
In concert, Godlike Bear is a one-man-band entity. The music can go from soft whispering folkpop into recreating more powerful and complex songs, with pulsating delay guitars and foot percussion. Rearranged cover versions by other artists such as Blondie, The Beatles and Marvin Gaye, are often part of the setlist as well as older songs he's written for projects and bands like My Aspirin Bird, EntArtEte MuSiK and Esse Quam Videri
Rites Of Passage released through Valley Music / Dalapop on the 10th of August 2018
