Deepspace is award-winning ambient artist Mirko Ruckels from Brisbane, Australia. The music is hypnotic, dreamy and atmospheric, consisting of soundscapes created with various synthesisers, and acoustic instruments, such as bells, guitars and piano.
Themes range from the macro - such as space, underwater, deserts and science fiction imaginings, to the micro - internal states and microscopic life.
Deepspace has released nine albums, eight independently and one "The Glittering Domain" (2009) released through American label, Hypnos. The first album "The Barometric Sea" was released in 2007, with "Slow Moving Lifeforms Part 1" and "The Barometric Sun" quickly after. Following this was "Subantarctic Sessions" (2008), an album based on Antartica and its frozen landscapes. Album-length track "Another Empty Galaxy" (2009) was followed by "World Ocean Atlas (2010) and "Slow Wave Cathedral (2011). His latest is "The Empty Atoms" (2016)
Deepspace has won several awards: The Barometric Sea won best debut album of 2007 on Electroambient Space, a site run by ambient aficionado Phil Derby. Subantarctic Sessions, and The Glittering Domain also picked up gongs for their respective years.
Deepspace is influenced by Brian Eno, Steve Roach, Alio Die and Stars of the Lid, who are some of the more influential ambient artists, but also by Classical music, in particular the music of the French impressionists; Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and English counterpart Ralph Vaughan Williams.
