Overshadowed by the more successful Lady Sovereign, British female MC Jentina appeared more in the tabloids than she did in the charts thanks to her rock star boyfriend and outspoken nature.
Born in a caravan in Woking, her Romany mother later moved her family of 13 brothers and sisters to a house in Surrey. Having left home at a young age, she got a job making switches in a factory where she scraped up enough money to travel to Miami. While there, she became a spokesperson for a model agency, and thanks to a Nas tape made by her brother, developed a love of hip-hop. After moving back to London, she was spotted by manager Dave Rorrell while singing her own songs at the Soho clothes store she worked in. After signing to Virgin Records, she released her debut single "Bad Ass Strippa" in 2004. Sampling the O'Jays "For the Love of Money," it received strong support from Radio 1 but only reached number 22. Second single "French Kisses," written by Cathy Dennis, was a much poppier affair but could still only chart two places higher, and after a disastrous monosyllabic appearance on TV show CD:UK, Jentina never released any more material in the U.K. However, her third single "Mysterious" became a big hit in Italy, as did the album of the same name, and several of her tracks appeared in U.S. hit TV show CSI New York. But she became a source of amusement when rival MC Lady Sovereign parodied her debut hit with the track "Sad Arse Strippa." In 2007, she became a pin-up in lads mag Maxim and featured in a spoof advertisement for Wonderbra. ~ Jon O'Brien, Rovi
