Like so many forebears in punk and rock before them, four-piece Sharkswimmer formed their gritty, textural indie-punk sound in the depths of Brooklyn.
Raised on a musical diet spanning Minor Threat’s serrated hardcore to Sunny Day Real Estate’s melodic indie rock, Buschardt’s guitar-focused taste paved the way for Sharkswimmer’s hardscrabble early demos in Austin. While in Brooklyn, he took those sketches to guitarist Danny De Juan, then performing with the indie group Fraidycat. Upon Fraidycat’s dissolution, Buschardt and De Juan linked up, fusing their different styles into impassioned and diaristic rock songs. With the added help of Jesse Reed on drums and Buschardt’s partner Steph on bass/vocals, the group wrote and recorded Sharkswimmer’s wiry, outstanding debut EP, Shut-In, in their rehearsal space in Brooklyn.
"Stolen Goods" (Nov. 5 on Cosmic Western) is the bands follow up three-song EP with producer Abe Seiferth (Car Seat Headrest, Yeasayer) continuing carving out new shapes in the familiar indie-punk rock mold. With both Shut-In and new music to come, Sharkswimmer seek to expand the borders of indie-punk, emo, and post-punk without forsaking a shred of poignancy or immediacy.
