Four-time finalist in the International Song writing Competition, an album listed in the Australian Music Prize, & winner of the ABC Fresh Air Comp—Steve Lane is one of Australia’s best kept songwriting secrets.
Has there been a storyteller in Australian music who ‘deserves a wider audience’ than Lane? It’s a phrase the singer/songwriter has heard a lot over his musical journey.
Lane however, is equally as content helping others tell their stories through sound & vision, merging work in outback aboriginal communities & pacific nations, with forays up Australia’s East Coast playing out front of the talented mates he calls the Autocrats (with Augie March's revered rhythm section).
In 2011, ‘The Romance of Communication’ was released through ABC Music, short listed for the AMP, as well as scoring the coveted album of the week on ABC JJ/DIG.
“Steve Lane & The Autocrats release an album that has all the tell-tale signs of an Australian band bound for longevity” - Faster Louder
In 2013, Rolling Stone’s Darren Levin wrote that sophomore album 'Birds Taking Flight' is "a bunch of mates writing tightly honed songs with their blinkers on”
3rd album ‘The Revenge of the Lawn’ is a culmination of some great & some testing life experiences shared with band mates & long-time collaborators.
"There’s a vulnerability & an intimacy heard on record that is undeniable" - The AU Review
"The start of a new & exciting chapter in the life of one of Australia’s most loved songwriters" - Rhythms
