Citizen of the World has built on the success of the foot stomping Folk-Rock genre, popularised by the likes of Mumford & Sons , to carve a new genre described by one competition judge as Epic Folk.
The band successfully combines the unique sound of the saxophone with acoustic folk and traditional rock to have you reflecting on the stories that shape your life. Since forming in 2012, the band has played at various venues around Sydney supporting bands like Woodlock and Food Court, toured India, and featured in the Chinese feature film “The Rise of a Tomboy”.
The band started in Lausanne, Switzerland in 2012 when lead singer / songwriter Gerrit Gmel began jamming with old friends and writing songs inspired by life events at the time. Moving to Sydney, Australia later that year, Gerrit re-established the band with new members. The new formation brings sax, acoustic guitar, keyboard, drums and bass together to take you on a journey from soulful acoustic melodies to foot thumping beats best described by one music blog Timber and Steel as “infectious and incredibly danceable.”
Since the start of 2016, COTW have played shows at Plan B Small Club and snatched a residency at Coogee’s iconic venue Selina’s. Their songs “Setting Out” reached international audiences through the syndicated radio show Passport Approved, was played in Triple J’s Roots N All and is a finalist in the Vanda and Young Songwriting Competition. Their song “Embers” marked their MTV debut on MTV Upload.
