Someone told me once that great songs come out of hard times...” Unspoken lead singer Chad Mattson reflects.
The band’s new album, Reason, is a testament to that statement. Their most vulnerable and honest work to date, this isn’t a batch of songs that came lightly. But that makes the album all the more special to the group, and the resonance all the more powerful for listeners. Feeling the grind of 15 years in the music industry catch up to them in their personal and professional lives, the group found themselves facing the pressing question of how to persist. “There we are passionately pleading with God, yet it seems like He’s not there in the ways we think He should be or in the time we think He should.” Rather than run, they dealt with the pain. They learned a new level of dependence on God, even when they didn’t understand all the answers to their questions. Adding gospel influences to their soulful-pop sound, they poured the hard-fought-for truth into their songs. “We don’t need a specific new sign from God, because we have the cross. That’s reason enough to continue to believe and trust. We’ve been given the victory. This album is about believing that what Scripture says is actually true and for us. It’s the reason we can love ourselves, the reason we’ve made it this far, that we can look in the mirror and be confident and know we’re going to be all right.”
