Dutch conductor Jac van Steen was educated at the Brabants Conservatory of Music, where he concentrated on music theory, orchestral conducting, and choral conducting.
He led the Nijmegen Bach Choir as conductor and music director from 1986 to 1990, and served as the music director of the Dutch National Ballet from 1989 to 1994. He has been a faculty member at The Hague's Royal Conservatory of Music in since 1992. Van Steen has conducted many European orchestras, serving as chief conductor of the Nuremberg Symphony, music director of the New Berlin Chamber Orchestra, chief conductor of the Staatskapelle Weimar, and principal guest conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Since 2008, he has been the general music director of the Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra. He has recorded for NMC, Winterthur, CPO, Chandos, and MDG.
