At once rootsy and grandly poetic, Sydney, Australia's Spookyland features frontman Marcus Gordon, his brother Liam on guitar, bassist Nic Malouf, and drummer Nath Mansfield.
Originally the folky solo project of Gordon, Spookyland's 2010 debut EP, Killin' One Bird with Two Stones, introduced his offbeat viewpoint and piercing tenor -- which recalls Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeff Mangum -- as well as the influence of American singer/songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, and Bruce Springsteen. By the time of 2013's single "The Silly Fucking Thing," Spookyland was a full-fledged band. The following year's Rock & Roll Weakling EP found them expanding their sound with the help of producer Tony Buchen. To record their debut album, Spookyland and Buchen traveled to Omaha, Nebraska to work at Conor Oberst's ARC Studios. Late in 2015, the seven-minute single "Bulimic" provided the first taste of Beauty Already Beautiful, which was released in May 2016. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi
