Brian Lisik's latest release, "Gudbye Stoopid Whirled," is a Don Dixon co-produced slice of homemade musical spontaneity – an instant basement-tape classic that pulls no punches, takes no prisoners, and rips the roof off without ever raising its voice.
Recorded at Steve Norgrove’s Bass Mint Studio, the album is a musically stripped affair, populated by inscrutable instrumentation - “lap drums,” “mouth trumpet” “heavy metal banjo,” and even a contribution of “F# minor guitar (to fix Brian’s screw up)" from mixing engineer Dixon (REM, Counting Crows, Smithereens, Gin Blossoms, Mathew Sweet).
"Gudbye" boasts a decidedly early-rockabilly/60s garage punk/Stax soul vibe, while avoiding the corny pantomime of many of today’s mainstream “roots” artists. Swirling guitars and understated, jazzy percussion buttress the album’s universal themes, as Lisik coos and snarls his lyrics with a restrained ferocity, percolating menacingly across its 33 minutes.
Lisik has performed with artists including Tim Easton, Waylon Payne, Wade Bowen, Ass Ponys, Jesse Malin, Chris Knight, Tommy Womack, Nicole Atkins, Eddie Money, and Roger McGuinn. He has also appeared on Fox 8 in Cleveland; WDVX-FM Knoxville’s “Blue Plate Special” show; and WMOT-FM in Nashville’s “Finally Friday.”
No Depression called Lisik’s music “a winning formula of catchy phrasing, jangly guitar riffs and great pop hooks.”
"Gudbye Stoopid Whirled" is scheduled for release 10/2/20 on Cherokee Queen Records.
