Havana D’Primera are the Cuban Timba band led & founded by Alexander Abreu in 2008.
They are widely recognized as one of the most popular bands to have emerged from Cuba in the last decade, with their 17 members encompassing revolutionary musicians from the 90’s, top young Cuban musicians as well as chief songwriter Abreu, who has established himself as a dominating vocalist, renowned songwriter and accomplished lyricist. Indeed, it is said to be his poetic lyrics that mark Havana D'Primera out from other famous Cuban groups around today. He is considered one of the most versatile Cuban musicians & throughout his career he has created a fascinating musical fusion of salsa, jazz, funk and afro-Cuban.
Following the release of debut album Haciendo Historia (Remasterizado) (Making History) in 2009, the band achieved international success following the release of their second full-length Pasaporte (Passport), which was released on Páfata Productions in 2012. It was voted as one of the top Latin albums of the year by NPR listeners and spawned the massive single Pasaporte which remains one of their most enduring songs and has become somewhat of an anthem for the Cuban people.
They followed the huge success of Pasaporte with La Vuelta al Mundo (Around the World) in 2015, which also produced another huge hit in Me Dicen Cuba. Cantor del Pueblo (Singer of the People) arrived in 2018, which showcased the group's growing musical versatility and Abreu's increasingly masterful lyricism.
