After touring their acclaimed 2016 debut album Bloodline all over the world, Tucson’s dark western cumbia outfit XIXA finally returns with a new track and a couple of shows in their home base of Arizona this July.
There’s news in the dry and dusty air. Hailed for their glittering, gritty rock blended with psychedelic Peruvian cumbia, XIXA’s already sandy sound gets an even heavier dose of the Sonoran desert. Through subtle hints and imagery, their newly released single casts Tombstone’s iconic western flair into rock'n'roll. Their trademark heavy fuzz guitars duel like The Fight at O.K. Coral, while a frantic, yet impossibly danceable, latin rhythm section pulses below.
‘Bloodline’ (Glitterhouse/Barbès, 2016) gained widespread media attention. Uncut called the album a "haunting, mesmerising stew” and R2 Magazine "an impossible-to-categorise blend of indie, americana and chicha” from a "superbly eclectic outfit”.
XIXA have been steadily touring ever since hitting minor and major venues and festivals all around the US, Mexico and Europe.
The band hails from the always-flourishing Tucson indie-rock scene, where Brian Lopez, Gabriel Sullivan and legendary drummer Winston Watson are also members of the last acclaimed incarnation of Giant Sand and have wide ranging résumé of international credits with the likes of Mexican Institute Of Sound, Calexico, X’s John Doe, KT Tunstall, Bob Dylan, and Alice Cooper, amongst many others.
